Four (4) confirmed cases of Pertussis (also known as Whooping Cough) have occurred at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School, and one (1) confirmed case at Douglas High School.
Due to Nevada school-entry immunization requirements, the vast majority of students are vaccinated and protected against Pertussis. (DTaP and Tdap are intended to guard against Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis.) We still encourage families and staff of to be aware of possible symptoms. Symptoms of Pertussis include:
- mild to severe and repeated cough
- dry hacking cough
- runny nose
- low grade fever
- rapid inhaling between coughs that makes a "whoop" sound
- choking spells in infants.
If you or any member of your family experiences these symptoms, we recommend you see a medical doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. If you do not have a family doctor and you do not know where to go for medical attention, please contact your School Nurse for referral assistance.
