Elementary Science Kits and the Science Resource Center

The K-6 teachers utilize DCSD-designed science kits to teach the Douglas County School District science critical content and the Nevada State standards science content.  In July of 2011, the National Research Council and the Committee on Conceptual Framework for the new K-12 Science Education Standards released the draft copy of "A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas".  From this Framework, new science standards will be written.  These new standards are expected to be released, in draft form, in the fall of 2012.

Elementary teachers in Douglas County use Science Kits to teach the major strands of Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science in grades K-6. Each grade has three kits, one in each of the strands, with the exception of Kindergarten, which has two kits. The Nature of Science content standard is infused throughout the kits. Teachers are expected to teach from all the kits in their grade level.

Kits are checked out from the Science Resource Center (SRC), which is housed at Douglas High School.  Alecia Gifford is in charge of restocking and checking out the kits. She can be reached at 782-5136 ext. 1833, or by emailing her at agifford@dcsd.k12.nv.us. Each school site has one day each week when kits can be delivered and/or picked up for return. Check with the sites for those days. Descriptions of the kits can be found in the Science Kit Catalog.  The request form is located in the Elementary Teachers' shared drive.  Open the folder labeled ScienceResourceKits, then double-click the PDF IconScienceKitRequestForm_distributed.pdf.  When you submit this form, it will be automatically transferred to the Science Resource Center.
