The Community Foundation of Western Nevada and Douglas County School District 21st Century Digital Classroom Donation Project

The Community Foundation of Western Nevada has generously provided the Douglas County School District with a commitment of $989,326 to fund the purchase and installation of Promethean interactive white boards and related instructional tools in our elementary schools over the next three years.   Each classroom and common instructional space in the elementary schools will receive a Promethean ActivBoard (interactive whiteboard), a Promethean ActivView (document camera), an ActivSlate (wireless tablet), a set of ActivExpressions (student response systems), and an ActivSound system (classroom audio enhancement).  Installations will begin with Minden Elementary School in the Fall of 2010, followed by Meneley, Scarselli, and Zephyr Cove Elementary schools during the summer of 2011.  During the summer of 2012 the planned installations will be at Gardnerville and Piñon Hills Elementary schools.  Teachers at each school will receive professional development on the use of the instructional tools and a team of teacher trainers at each site will receive advanced training to help provide support to their teachers with the use of the instructional tools across the grade levels.

The overarching goal of this project is to improve academic achievement for all students incorporating the use of 21st Century Digital Classroom technologies.  The positive impact on academic achievement will be accomplished by training all teaching staff in the use of each of the Digital Classroom technologies while emphasizing research based instructional strategies, instructional activities with high student engagement, instruction based on state standards and district critical content, the use of formative interim assessment data to help guide instruction, and high quality professional development utilizing site based trainers, mentors, and coaches.  Evaluation of the project will include longitudinal tracking and analysis of student achievement data, T4S classroom observation data, and classroom technology utilization data.

Established in 1998 the Community Foundation of Western Nevada has distributed over $34 million in grants and scholarships to the communities of Western Nevada.  In conjunction with the May 2009 donation of $875,000 from Big George Ventures to Jacks Valley Elementary School to provide 21st Century learning tools and technology infrastructure improvements, the current Community Foundation of Western Nevada  donation provides the Douglas County School District with means to place 21st Century Digital Classroom technologies in each elementary school.  The District is providing supplemental funding for the required site infrastructure upgrades and hardware.  Phase I and II funding is estimated at $315K.  The District will continue to search for funding for Phase III – approximately $755K.

The generous donation by the Community Foundation of Western Nevada makes 21st Century Digital Classrooms a reality in the Douglas County School District elementary schools!

A gracious thank you to Eric & Nikki Ristine for donating their time to compile and edit the introduction video.
